Formed in 1998 in Santa Barbara, CA, Sugarcult set to work with the following ingredients: 4 guys, 3 chords, 2 guitars and 1 van. Armed with a batch of energized songs, the band toured the west coast generating a healthy buzz, selling their two indie records and homemade t-shirts out of the back of their van.
In spring, after signing with Ultimatum Music, Sugarcult entered Rumbo Studios in Los Angeles to record their debut album with producer Matt Wallace (the Replacements, Faith No More). The album, titled, "Start Static", was released on August 21, 2001.
The band's sound subscribes to the don't-bore-us-get-to-the-chorus approach of power-pop, underlined with the don't-give-a-fuck spirit of late 70's punk. Standing out from the hordes of modern rock bands, Sugarcult sticks close to the raw essentials of all great rock 'n' roll: energy, attitude and style. However it's the well-crafted songs and melodic hooks that really set this band apart.
"There's something about the energy that's packed into those two and a half minute songs, like Elvis Costello's 'Radio Radio' or Cheap Trick's 'Surrender' that shoot like bullets compared to a lot of today's popular music," says singer/guitarist and chief songwriter Tim Pagnotta. Guitarist Marko 72 adds, "We like to merge the old with the new. We're not interested in being retro. We thrive on updating that certain common-denominator that has stood the test of time from the Beatles to the Ramones to Nirvana."

* Formed in 1998 in Santa Barbara, California. * Sugarcult avoids settling into the comfortable, predictable territory of a single genre. Instead, the band subscribes to the don't-bore-us-get-to-the-chorus approach of power pop, underlined with the don't-give-a-fuck spirit of late-'70s punk. * Recorded and released three indie records ("Eleven," Get Street Cred" and "Wrap Me Up In Plastic" for Santa Barbara-based Cooler Records. * Recorded the debut album "Start Static" with producer Matt Wallace (Replacements, Faith No More) which was released August 21, 2001.
* "Start Static" first single "Stuck in America" stuck at #1 on R&R, Album Network, FMQB and Hits specialty charts. "Stuck In America" was added to over 50 modern rock stations, including Chicago, Boston, Philly, Dallas, St Louis, Phoenix, Nashville, Houston, etc.
* "Stuck In America" is a fiery anthem about escaping the rut of youthful boredom and discontent. Sugarcult vocalist and guitarist Tim Pagnotta is an expert on the subject, moving between 13 different homes and attending four elementary schools, two junior highs and three high schools.
* "Stuck in America" video received spins on MTV, MTV2, MTVX and was in heavy rotation at Much Music USA. Sugarcult were featured on MTV's Spanking New Music Week. The video is still playing at MTV2, MTVX and Much Music, USA.
* Since Summer 2001, Sugarcult did two months on the Warped Tour, did five amphitheatre shows with Blink-182 (second stage), did two months on the Reel Big Fish/Goldfinger tour, did three weeks on the Good Charlotte tour and a number of radio station festivals around the country. The band will co-headline tour with Homegrown in January 2002.
* Sugarcult's second single "Bouncing Off the Walls" will fly to radio February 5 and features Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett.
* After years of playing bass in national punk bands Swingin' Utters, the Ataris and Nerf Herder, Marko 72 joined Sugarcult on guitar. He also ran two indie record labels - My Records and Cooler Records, based in Santa Barbara.
* At Rumbo Studios in Los Angeles, the band tracked their album in the same room that spawned the generation defining sounds of Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction and No Doubts' Tragic Kingdom
